Overview

Family Managed Supports are a means to ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities and their family have more choices in the way their family member receive supports required to be included in the community.

The two options (or combination of options) available to families though FMS are:

  • Families can hire and pay their own staff (through a Family Managed Services Agreement- direct hire) or
  • Families can hire and pay a PDD approved service provider (through a Family Managed Service Agreement - approved Service Provider)

Some of the major elements of the Family Managed approach are as follows:

1. Positive planning and benefits for family and individuals

  • Ability to be participate in the individuals community
  • Family networking and the opportunity to share information and resources
  • To be able to access activities related to the individuals values and culture
  • Overall development of a program more suited to the individuals needs within their local community

2. Increased community involvement

  • Familiarity within the community allowing the development of natural supports eg. going to the corner or video store
  • Access to activities within the community the individual resides in
  • Local natural supports
  • Development of a program more suited to the individuals needs within their local community

3. Ability to hire appropriate staff for the individual

  • Appropriate match of staff with the individual which develops a strong relationship
  • Overall greater staff retention 

4. Flexibility and control

  • Develop a part time, full time or a shared program
  • Short term or long term program
  • Ability to sub contract to an approved Service Provider
  • Family in control of approach
